The Harvester (Library of Indiana Classics)

The Harvester (Library of Indiana Classics) Review

Gene Stratton-Porter returns us to her beloved Midwestern woodlands with a hero modeled after Henry David Thoreau. He and his "wonderful, alluring" Ruth ultimately find idyllic bliss in the pure, unspoiled woods, but not before her mysterious past is revealed and resolved.

Heirs and Graces

Heirs and Graces Review

The little island of Candlewick lies somewhere off the coast of England. It has a castle, rolling hills (well, one rolling hill), lots of heather, seagulls, some rather interesting rocks, a work-in-progress chalk picture on the hillside, and, of course, beaches. Perfect, so Reginald and Blodwyn Winterbottom think for a spot of camping.

With unremitting cheerfulness the couple cope with the eccentricities of the island inhabitants. These include the amorous ninety-year-old Baron with his penchant for naturism, Hephzibah Fidget the painted lady of the local pub who is intent on adding a new dimension to the term “merry widow”, Milligan Shovel, wild-eyed priest of the island who weekly harangues his congregation for their sinful waywardness and who is determined to exorcise the evil spirit he just knows is haunting one of his parishioners and whom he is convinced has it in for him, and Hieronymus Hubbard, secretary to His Lordship whose job is to track down an heir to the baronetcy as soon as possible.

In the face of some indifference and a great deal of outright hostility, the ghost, what appear to be vampires, and quite possibly a lost Yeti, it would seem that any hopes the Winterbottom’s may have of enjoying a peaceful holiday are doomed.

Snowed in with Grandmother Silk (Bccb Blue Ribbon Fiction Books (Awards))

Snowed in with Grandmother Silk (Bccb Blue Ribbon Fiction Books (Awards)) Review

Ruddy's grandmother isn't much fun. She calls him Rudford, not Ruddy, and she doesn't like noise or games or television. When Ruddy's parents go on a cruise and leave him with Grandmother Silk, Ruddy knows it's going to be a loooong ten days.

Then one night a snowstorm comes howling through. Ruddy and his grandmother are left without light and heat and water-and they have no one to talk to but each other. Slowly, with the help of an old chessboard, the moon, and a gorilla suit, they reach out to each other in some surprising ways.

Partly a survival story, this is mostly a tale of two people who think they aren't alike at all-until they have no choice but to look for the things they have in common. Carol Fenner's portrayal of eight-year-old Ruddy is childlike and real, and Amanda Harvey's full-color illustrations capture the warmth and humor of a story that is sure to leave readers smiling.
